Library Hours, Locations, and Calendar: Noise in the Library

Library Noise Map

This is a visual map of the library. It indicates that the first floor houses our children's and young adult collections, computers, K-12 Tutoring spaces, the reference collection, group technology, the main stacks (A-N), the reference desk, study rooms, a relaxation area, and the circulation desk. The noise levels allowed on the first floor are family noise and group noise, and a cell phone area at the front of the library. On the second floor of the library, there are administrative offices, study spaces, study rooms, periodicals, the oversized collection, and the main stacks (P-Z). The entire second floor is a quiet zone.

Noise Guidelines

Areas on the first floor of the Library are designated in purple for group work space. The following rules apply in group spaces:

  • Cell phones must be turned to silent, and they cannot be used audibly. Texting is encouraged! Phone conversations may be held in the Library lounge opposite the main circulation desk.
  • Low-volume conversations conducive to concentration and productivity are allowed.
  • Headphones should be used for most media. If groups wish to use media without headphones, a study room can accommodate this requirement.

All of the second floor of the library is designated in red for quiet work space. The following rules apply in quiet spaces:

  • Cell phones must be turned to silent, and they cannot be used audibly. Texting is encouraged! Phone conversations may be held in the Library lounge opposite the main circulation desk.
  • Quiet work only—no conversations, except for occasional whispering are allowed!
  • Noise canceling headphones are required with media. If noise is audible despite headphones, the patron will be asked to move to a different area of the library.

Family work space is designated in green on the first floor of the Library. Families with children or groups who require louder conversations are encouraged to use this specially designed space:

  • Cell phones must be turned to silent, and they cannot be used audibly. Texting is encouraged! Phone conversations may be held in the Library lounge opposite the main circulation desk.
  • Indoor voices are allowed.
  • Headphones should be used for most media. If groups wish to use media without headphones, a study room can accommodate this request.

The first floor entry area for the library is designated in orange as a cell zone. The following rules apply in the main lounge:

  • Cell phones must be turned to silent, but cell conversations are OK, in addition to texting.
  • Indoor voices are allowed.
  • Headphones should be used for most media. If groups wish to use media without headphones, a study room can accommodate this request.

Study rooms are available on both the first and second floors. Cell phones, media, and other sounds are permitted in study rooms when the door is closed, but fellow patrons should not be able to hear these sounds outside of the study room.
