Native American Heritage Month began under George H. W. Bush's presidency when a joint resolution designated November of 1990 "National American Indian Heritage Month" to recognize the culture and contribution of Native Americans. The following years would follow such celebration of Native American heritage in the month of November. In 2008, Alaskan Natives were added to the monthly celebration.
